More than one room needed to change.
This Shavano Park project reached across the home, creating a more connected first floor while carrying the same point of view through the kitchen, living spaces, bedrooms and bath.
We've worked in homes throughout Shavano Park, from kitchens and bathrooms to spaces that needed a strategic change. We start with what's working, what isn't and what would make the house work better for you now.

Every home presents a different opportunity. Explore a completed Shavano Park project and see how the details come together.
Many of the Shavano Park homes we've worked in already have plenty worth keeping. Good bones. Generous rooms. Details that belong to the house. The job is figuring out where the home needs to adapt to the people living there now, without changing things simply for the sake of changing them.
That's why we start in the home, not across a sales desk. We walk the space with you, talk through what's working and what isn't, and look at the project from both a design and construction perspective before asking you to make big decisions.
We look at how it was built, how you use it and what's worth keeping.
Layout, structure, materials and construction are considered together before work begins.
Good ideas still have to work in the house. We solve those questions before they become your problem.
Older homes can surprise you. When they do, we stay involved, communicate clearly and work through what comes next.
Keep what works. Rethink what doesn't. Build the rest properly.
From whole-home updates to kitchens and primary bathrooms, our work in and around Shavano Park has taken on very different homes and very different needs.

Every project starts by looking at the home that's already there and understanding what the people living in it need next.
A lot can change while you live in the same home. Kids grow up. Parents visit more often. Working from home becomes permanent. Entertaining changes. The kitchen that worked fifteen years ago starts feeling cut off from everything else. That doesn't mean the whole house needs to be reinvented.
Sometimes the square footage is already there. Reworking how rooms connect can make the home feel considerably different without adding space simply for the sake of adding it.
Opening a kitchen isn't just about removing walls. Sightlines, circulation, storage and the way adjoining rooms are used all matter. We look at the whole space before deciding what should move.
Bathrooms, closets and bedrooms often need to work differently than they did when the house was purchased. Better storage, easier movement and a more considered layout can matter more than adding features.
Not everything old needs replacing. Good materials, architectural details and parts of the layout that still work can give us something worth designing around.

See More Client Stories →Remodeling an established home brings different questions. Here are a few we think are worth answering before the decisions start piling up.
Often, yes, especially when the location, lot and overall house already work for you. For homeowners who intend to stay, the decision is often less about preparing a house for resale and more about deciding whether the existing home can be adapted for the next stage of life. We look at what is worth keeping, what is limiting the way you live now and where a remodel would make a meaningful difference.
We don't assume everything old needs to go. Many established homes have proportions, materials or architectural details worth preserving. We start by identifying what already belongs to the house, then look for the places where the layout, storage, lighting, finishes or daily function need to catch up with the people living there. The goal is a home that feels considered, not newly remodeled for the sake of looking remodeled.
It depends on how the spaces affect one another. If a kitchen remodel changes flooring, sightlines or circulation into the living and dining areas, planning those spaces together can prevent expensive decisions from being undone later. Other projects make perfect sense in phases. Shaw can help establish the larger plan first so that today's project doesn't create a problem for tomorrow's.
For many homeowners, this matters almost as much as the finished room. Before construction begins, we talk through access, work areas, sequencing and how the project will affect everyday routines. Shaw uses a coordinated project team rather than leaving the homeowner to manage individual trades. If remaining in the house during construction is important, tell us early. It should influence how the project is planned.
Yes. In fact, we'd rather have that conversation before anyone starts choosing finishes. Our first step is an in-home walkthrough with a project specialist who can look at the house from a construction perspective and understand what you're trying to accomplish. From there, design and construction planning work together. We don't want to sell you changes you don't need.
Removing walls is only one part of the decision. We also look at structure, utilities, cabinetry, flooring transitions, lighting, furniture placement and how opening one room changes the rooms around it. Shavano Park's homes span several decades, so two houses on nearby streets can present very different construction conditions. This is one reason we prefer to see the house before talking seriously about solutions.
Requirements depend on the scope of work, and Shavano Park is its own incorporated city with its own municipal requirements. Structural changes, additions and other substantial work may involve permitting or additional review. We identify the requirements that apply to the actual project rather than expecting the homeowner to sort through them alone.
Earlier than you might think. A well-planned remodel has work to do before demolition: understanding the existing house, establishing scope, developing the design, making selections, pricing the work and addressing permitting when required. If you have a date that matters, such as retirement, family visiting, travel or another life change, bring it up during the first conversation. A realistic schedule is much easier to build before decisions become urgent.
